About us
Who we are
Children of Kandakat is a US based 501(c)(3), non-profit organization founded with the aim of building schools in all the marginalized rural areas of Sudan
Kandakat is the title given to the Nubian queens of the ancient African Kingdom of Kush (in modern-day Sudan). Amanirenas, being one of the most famous kandakat, lead her Kushite army in a victory against the Romans in 25 BC.
Children of kandakat was established as a response to the declining state of education in the Republic of Sudan. Our founder, Haythem Mohamed Ali, noticed that, in particular, in the country’s rural areas, his people were marginalized, had no schools for their children, and if they did, the schools were in terrible shape. Without classrooms, the children are forced to study under trees and are exposed to the elements. All the best schools were private and primarily concentrated in the capital. Thus, he formed children of kandakat to contribute to education development and challenge the systemic inequities in rural Sudan.
The decline of education in Sudan has been apparent for decades. Education is a vital human right and a passport to the future. The organization believes that the best way to eradicate poverty and build the nation is to ensure that every child in Sudan has a level playing field. Achieving education for all the children of Sudan is essential for attaining socio-economic stability. Empowering them to excel today and make a difference in building the nation tomorrow.
The inspiration came from the patriotic music of the late legendary African Emperor, Mohammed Wardi (may Allah have mercy on him and make his resting place in paradise for his lifelong contribution to his country and people). This nonprofit organization was also born as a tribute to this incredible man. As an act of showing appreciation to this national treasure, children of kandakat will host tribute concerts in the United States and abroad.
